Unilodge East End

15 Synagogue Place, Adelaide

One of 4 major student rental apartments run by UniLodge in Adelaide, East End is the closest to the ADH and Uni. A 5-10 minute walk to the ADH/Uni.

Pros:

  • Extremely short distance to Uni, if you forget something at home you can just run back to get it.

  • Right next to Fancy Burger, Subway, HJ's, Zambrero's, Amalfi's, Brunelli, Austral and various other cafes, eateries and pubs.

  • 2-3 minutes away from Rundle Mall.

  • Chillax common room with 2 study rooms, a TV room with projector, billards and table-tennis tables.

Cons:

  • If you don't apply for the NRAS scheme, its about $200+ a week, if you do apply - its about $175.

  • They make you join UniLodge's community spirit program. Some students may enjoy the activities but you are quite busy in dentistry and often ain't got time for that.

Other info:

  • Units ending in number '05' is the best (for obvious reasons such as view and layout)

  • The apartments are 2 bedrooms each. Shared toilet and kitchen - the student who wrote this review advises you to move in with someone you know.

  • Gym, pool, spa, steam room and parking included.

Cons:

  • Noise from Fringe Festival and Clipsal early in the year, which is nothing compared to living closer to East Tce.

  • Also lack of exercise from walking to uni hahaha!

237 Wakefield Street

A private apartment complex about 15-20 minutes walking distance away from Uni, the home of our Vice-Pres.

Pros:

  • Nice double storey fully-furnished apartments

  • Reasonable distance from city centre and university

  • Safe

Cons:

  • 10 minute walk for take out food

  • Rent is fairly high -

  • Need to have probably 2 other people for it to be financially feasible.

Bent St Apartments

45 York St, Adelaide

Also run by Unilodge, Bent St Apartments are a 7 min walk from Uni and 10 from the ADH.

Pros:

  • Close to uni and the ADH

  • Cosy and warm during winter

Cons:

  • Small place

  • No reception area for mail

  • Walls are not soundproof

North Adelaide

Living in North Adelaide usually means you will be staying at one of four of North Adelaide's residential colleges. There is a fifth college but it is exculsive for post-graduates. All four are about 15-20 minutes away from the ADH and Uni. The following are some pros and cons of college life and some college reviews by dental students:

Pros:

  • Helps you acclimatise from going straight from school or interstate/overseas to a place where you know nobody.

  • Great place for being part of a community and not feel isolated, especially in early years. Security in knowing there's always someone to talk to.

  • Close to uni - heaps of social events with the other colleges

  • Exposures to non-Dental students

  • Heaps of opportunities in general; including sporting and leadership roles.

Cons:

  • Depending on the college, can be quite expensive

Other info:

  • Each college has a different atmosphere and would advise to have a tour before making a decision

  • Plenty of people apply for colleges after their first year of uni. So if you're thinking college sounds like an experience you want to try, you can still apply for 2nd year.
  • Marksenfest is a college run event that is open to public and is one of the biggest "Day's Out" in SA

St Ann’s College

Pros:

  • You get to meet heaps of people from different places studying different degrees and make heaps of great friendships outside of dentistry.

  • Catered: you don't have to worry about groceries or washing dishes.

  • Lots of college activities available from inter college sport to pub nights and college parties

  • The closest college to the ADH/Uni

Cons:

  • There are set meal times and some colleges have compulsory formal dinners. But you can request a meal be put away for you.

  • You don't get to decide what you get to eat for lunch/dinner.

  • Sometimes college food isn't the greatest.

  • Sometimes college and dental social events would clash, so you have to decide which one to go to.

Mattanya

16 – 26 Finniss Street, North Adelaide

A 4-5 bedroom shared house run by University of Adelaide. Shared kitchen and toilets. 15-20 minute walk to Uni.
